Children's Dentistry

At Sparkle Dental Care, we treat patients of all ages, and this includes children. Typically, we start seeing children when their first tooth comes in. This gives your dentist near Fairfield the chance to assess the tooth and how it is erupting.

During early dental visits, we work to instil positive associations with the dental clinic. We want your child to grow up without fear of the dentist, which may carry into adulthood.

As your child ages, we introduce age-appropriate dental services, including:

  • Dental x-rays as needed
  • Teeth cleans
  • Dental sealants
  • Fluoride treatments

Your dentist near Fairfield will also evaluate the function of your child’s mouth, including the tongue. Sometimes children are tongue-tied, which may lead to speech and eating difficulties. This condition may be treatable with minimally invasive laser dentistry.

Throughout your child’s dental care journey with us, we always have time to answer your questions and provide tips to help you care for your child’s teeth between dental visits.

At Sparkle Dental Care, we love treating children and families.

Dentures and Partial Dentures

Facing tooth loss can be an emotional experience, and many people opt for dentures, which is an economical way to replace missing teeth. And with today’s modern dentures, you can have a natural-looking smile that functions as good as it looks. Dentures today look better and are more comfortable than the dentures your grandparents had sitting at the bedside table in a glass of water.

Getting Used to Dentures

When you first get dentures, you will find that there is a learning curve that comes along with getting used to them. Most patients start out eating soft foods, gradually adding more of their favourite foods as they grow accustomed to chewing with dentures.

Speaking normally can be tricky when you first get dentures, but with practice, denture wearers will find that they can speak the way they did when they had a full mouth of teeth. For those who had been living with missing teeth for a while, they will also notice improvements in speaking.

You don’t have to live with missing teeth. We invite you to talk to the friendly team at our Bayside dental clinic to find out more about how modern dentures can improve your quality of life by giving you back your smile.

Cosmetic bonding – Make small repairs to chipped teeth with cosmetic bonding, which can cover an entire tooth or just fill in chips that collect stains and stand out when you smile.

Veneers – Composite or porcelain veneers can dramatically change the appearance of your smile. You can achieve an entirely new look by opting for veneers to cover the fronts of your existing teeth.

Invisalign – If you have crooked or gappy looking teeth, Invisalign clear braces make your dream of a straight, perfect smile a reality. Not only that, but Invisalign also makes it easier for you to clean your teeth by aligning them properly.

The next time you come in for an appointment, mention that you’re interested in cosmetic dentistry, and we will schedule a consultation for you at our Bayside or Fairfield locations.

We love seeing patients’ smiles when they feel great about the way they look.

Preventive Dentistry

Woman Eating an Apple | Dietary Choices and Oral HealthThe foods and drinks we consume regularly have a significant impact on the health of our smiles. Avoiding sugars are not the only things we have to watch for when it comes to keeping our teeth strong.

Choosing the Right Beverages

What we drink has a huge effect on our teeth. After all, liquids are capable of accessing all surface areas, making them one of the predominant causes of tooth decay. Although 'sugar-free' or 'diet' beverages may have artificial sweeteners and fewer cavities, they are just as capable of causing tooth decay.

Drinking fluoridated water is one of the healthiest things we can do for our teeth. Not only does it rinse the teeth of acids and biofilm, but the fluoride also aids in healthy tooth development.

The Foods and Snacks We Consume

Eating fresh, crispy fruits and vegetables are beneficial to the health of our teeth and gums. These firm, fibrous foods stimulate gum tissues, improve immunity and clean the teeth as we chew them. Produce is our go-to snack and a predominant portion of our meals.

Customised Nutritional Counseling

We understand that some of our patients want help in making smart choices about their diets. We also understand that certain types of medical conditions may impact the types of food that you can consume. Our dentists and hygienists can help you balance your nutrition so that it is beneficial to you physically, as much as it is to your smile.

Woman About to Brush Her Teeth | Preventing Gum DiseaseA good home oral hygiene routine can help maintain your health between visits. It can also help to prevent the onset of gum disease. Gum disease is the primary cause of adult tooth loss. Why? Because most people do not realise gum disease is as serious as tooth decay. The prevalence of the condition is also shown to have a direct correlation with the severity of other health conditions including:

  • Cardiovascular diseases
  • Obesity
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Premature birth and low birth weight
  • Sleep apnea

Preventing cavities and gum disease routinely depend on a two-step oral hygiene process that includes:

Brushing

Correct tooth brushing is always done with a soft bristled brush, to prevent gum recession or excessive wear. Brush for two minutes, twice daily, focusing on only one or two teeth at a time. Angling the bristles toward the gum lines will help remove plaque deposits that are accumulating just under the edge of the gums.

Flossing

Cleaning between the teeth and under the gum line is essential for complete oral hygiene. Wrap the floss tightly around each tooth, sliding it up and down several times against the tooth and just below the gumline. This process removes plaque buildup between the teeth and just under the gum tissues where periodontal disease first starts.

If swelling or bleeding is present when you brush or floss, continue brushing as directed. Improvement is typically seen within two weeks. For patients with additional fixed prosthesis such as braces or bridges, our dental hygienists will discuss techniques and oral hygiene aids that can be used to improve your plaque control. Schedule your preventive care appointment by calling us today.

Root Canal Treatment

Root Canals | Bayside VICMany people feel anxiety at the mere mention of the words 'root canal,' but the truth is that this tooth-saving dental procedure is quite common. The only pain associated with root canal treatment in our Bayside and Fairfield VIC dental clinics is toothache that often brings people to see us in the first place.

Signs You Might Need a Root Canal:

  • Toothache pain that goes from mild to unbearable in a short amount of time
  • Sudden sensitivity to cold or heat on a specific tooth
  • Swollen gums at the site of a sensitive tooth
  • A white spot on the gums
  • A tooth that is discoloured

If you are experiencing any of these signs, this could indicate that there is an infection deep within the root of the tooth, and you should call our dental surgery straight away. Putting off treatment can mean the difference between saving your tooth and ultimately losing it to extraction.

With root canal treatment, your dentist can remove the infection from the tooth root, alleviate your pain and save your tooth. The area to be treated will be fully anesthetized beforehand, so the procedure itself is painless.

If you have a bothersome tooth, we invite you to call us. We can conduct an examination to determine whether or not you need a root canal.

Teeth Whitening

Teeth bleaching has its name because of the ingredient used called hydrogen peroxide. In Australia, we have specific rules that indicate only dental practitioners may provide whitening productsTeeth Whitening | Bayside & Fairfield NSW to patients which contain more than 6 per cent of hydrogen peroxide. When getting in-chair whitening done by a dental practitioner, we in Australia are allowed to use higher concentrations of this ingredient which can effectively permeate into the tooth enamel. Weaker concentrations only affect the surface of the enamel.

What is the difference?

The difference between home whitening kits and getting whitening by a dentist can vary. Often dentists that do whitening in the chair contain light activation. Both at-home and in-chair contain the same ingredient (hydrogen peroxide). However, in-chair systems usually use products that release a higher level. Many dentists now have take-home trays for patients who want to their whiten their teeth. The main difference is that dentists usually take a mould of the patient's teeth and have a tray of their mouth made specifically for the patient to avoid the ingredients going onto the gum, causing burns.

What should you do before?

It is important to know that teeth whitening will not change the colour of crowns, caps or fillings as it only affects natural teeth. It would be a good idea to get a check-up before undergoing any whitening as it is much known to cause sensitivity.
