Dental Fillings: Fixing Cavities and Saving Teeth
Dental decay is one of the most common preventable diseases in both adults and children. We offer tooth fillings at our Bayside, VIC and Fairfield, VIC dental surgery locations to protect and seal decayed teeth.
Preventing Dental Decay
The best way to prevent dental decay is simple. Take excellent care of your teeth and eat a healthy diet.
- Brush teeth for two minutes twice a day with fluoride toothpaste
- Floss teeth daily
- Have twice-yearly dental cleans and exams
- Commit to routine x-rays
- Avoid sugary snacks and soda
For patients at a higher risk for dental caries (decay), we may recommend additional preventive measures including fluoride applications and fissure sealants as an added protection for your teeth.
Early Diagnosis Methods
Many people want to skip x-rays, especially if their teeth feel comfortable. It is essential, however, to remember that dental decay will not present symptoms until they are advanced and involve the nerve. In addition to a visual exam by your dentist, we also recommend dental x-rays to identify decay before it puts your tooth at risk for infection or extraction.
Tooth Fillings to Save Teeth
When we identify instances of decay, prompt treatment often results in less invasive and costly procedures. In most cases, we use white tooth fillings in our Bayside, VIC and Fairfield, VIC Sparkle Dental Care locations to preserve the appearance of the smile. Particularly large, posterior (back teeth) fillings may require amalgam fillings or a dental crown.
Tooth-coloured fillings come in a variety of shades to match natural teeth. Composite, made of glass particles and BPA-free plastic, provide a realistic restoration.
After anaesthetising the area, your dentist will remove decay and apply composite in layers, hardening it with a curing light. Then, your dentist will polish and shape the final layer to blend seamlessly with the tooth.
