Crown Lengthening in Hampton & Fairfield VIC
At Sparkle Dental Care, we save patients’ existing teeth whenever possible, as it is typically the most conservative approach to dentistry. In some cases, altering the gum tissue is necessary to achieve the health and restorative treatments we offer. We will always present every treatment option to you and endeavour to provide efficient and comfortable dentistry.
On occasion, it may be necessary to adjust the gumlines around individual teeth to expose more of the tooth structure or improve oral health. Removing gum tissue for this purpose is called crown lengthening.
We may perform crown lengthening in our Fairfield or Hampton dental clinics either surgically or with the use of a soft tissue laser. Either way, we always make sure that you feel comfortable throughout your procedure. Your comfort is our top priority. Sparkle Dental Bayside and Fairfield offer soft tissue laser therapy to make crown lengthening as comfortable as possible for our patients. Naturally, we use an appropriate anaesthetic to numb the area as well.
We typically recommend crown lengthening for purposes, including:
Restoring Badly Damaged Teeth
If a tooth has broken or decayed too near the gumline, it may be difficult if not wholly impossible to restore the tooth. After all, a certain amount of tooth structure must be present in order to support a prosthesis such as a crown or bridge. By adjusting the gumline to expose a larger portion of the tooth, we are able to lengthen the visible crown and have enough structure present to support a fixed crown or bridge.
Managing Periodontal Disease
In periodontal disease, deep gum pockets surround each tooth. Cleaning these gum pockets can be very difficult to do, especially if they are severe. By making these pockets “shallower” through crown lengthening, it is easier to clean them thoroughly each day. This improves the oral hygiene process, periodontal therapy response and ability to avoid food packed below the gumline.
Cosmetic Dentistry – Gingival Sculpting
In some cases, the gums look uneven or asymmetrical, giving the smile an off-kilter appearance. By reshaping the gum tissue that is visible when you smile, we can even out the appearance of gum tissue. Because dental lasers are so precise, we often perform this procedure using a soft tissue laser that removes excess tissue and is typically more comfortable.
If you have been told that crown lengthening surgery was necessary to save your smile, or you want gums that look more even, we invite you to arrange a consultation with one of Sparkle Dental Care's gentle dentists.
We will discuss your options with you and whether or not a non-surgical technique is an option. Make an appointment online or by calling us today.
