Crown Lengthening in Hampton & Fairfield VIC

Crown Lengthening procedureOn occasion it may be necessary to adjust the gumlines around certain teeth, in order to make them restorable or improve their oral health. This process is called crown lengthening.

Crown lengthening may be done surgically or with the use of a soft tissue laser. Prime Dental Bayside offers soft tissue laser therapy to make crown lengthening as comfortable as possible!

We typically recommend crown lengthening for purposes including:

Restoring Badly Damaged Teeth

If a tooth has broken or decayed too near the gumlines, it may be difficult if not completely impossible to restore the tooth. After all, a certain amount of tooth structure must be present in order to support a prosthesis such as a crown or bridge. By adjusting the gumlines to expose a larger portion of tooth, we are able to lengthen the visible crown and have enough structure present to support a fixed prosthesis.

Managing Periodontal Disease

In periodontal disease, deep gum pockets surround each tooth. Cleaning these gum pockets can be very difficult to do, especially if they are severe. By making these pockets “shallower” through crown lengthening, it is easier to clean them thoroughly each day. This improves the oral hygiene process, periodontal therapy response, and the ability to avoid food packed below the gumlines.

If you have been told that crown lengthening surgery was necessary to save your smile, we invite you to schedule a consultation with one of Sparkle Dental Care's dentists. We will discuss your options with you and whether or not a non-surgical technique is an option. Make an appointment online or by calling us today.
