In our Hampton and Fairfield dental practices, we often use dental inlays and onlays to protect teeth with severe decay or teeth that have been fractured. Inlays and onlays are most appropriate for teeth with damage we can’t correct with a tooth-coloured filling, but not enough damage to require a dental crown.
What Is the Difference Between Inlays and Onlays?
With a tooth inlay, we can seal and protect a tooth in between the cusps, which are the points of the teeth. Inlays are often an excellent option for back teeth that need protection and support due to decay. We place gold inlays or match the inlay to your tooth colour for a seamless appearance.
With a tooth onlay, we cover the cusps of the teeth. However, we do not entirely encase the tooth, as would be the case with a dental crown.
An onlay strengthens and protects the tooth. Like an inlay, it is often the best choice for protection for damaged or decayed back teeth, which sustain a lot of pressure when you chew. We can also match an onlay to your surrounding teeth for a discreet look.
The Inlay and Onlay Procedure
If you need inlays or onlays to protect your teeth, our Hampton or Fairfield dentists will book a visit for you to our practice. Inlays and onlays require at least two visits. During the first visit, we remove decay, if necessary, and take an impression of the tooth. Then, we cover it with a temporary restoration, and you go on your way. Next, we will send the tooth impression to a lab, and the lab will create your custom inlay or onlay.
Once the lab completes the restoration, which usually takes less than two weeks, you can return to our practice to have it placed. We will replace the temporary restoration with your permanent and inlay or onlay, and the process is complete.
You’ll leave your second visit with a healthier, stronger tooth.
