It’s important to emphasise good oral health care habits in your children with proper brushing and flossing, but another way to help prevent cavities is with dental sealants. Sealants are essentially a thin coating that we brush onto the teeth to help prevent cavities from forming. This affordable procedure is simple and can go a long way in preventing tooth decay from taking hold.
At our Bayside and Fairfield, VIC dental clinics, we recommend fissure sealants for most children—and some adults—as part of their preventive dental care programme.
The Benefits of Fissure Sealants
Fissure sealants work by protecting the natural grooves that are present in back molars. These areas of the tooth’s surface are more susceptible to tooth decay because it’s easy for bacteria to build up. Often children don’t brush their back teeth as well as they should because it is more difficult to reach this area.
Some studies show that up to 80 per cent of cavities are prevented in the two years following the application of dental sealants and that children without sealants can have up to three times the number of cavities as those who have the sealants. The sealants can be retained in the mouth for as many as nine years following application, and they can be easily monitored with routine visits to the dentist. Depending on the tooth and method of application, some sealants have been known to last much longer.
